WINDOWS 10

Microsoft is pushing out a free upgrade from Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 to Windows 10 this summer, and they have begun this push upgrade with a reservation process. This is actually an official update from Microsoft, but be certain that malicious software will very soon start imitating this process.  You may see a notification icon like below in your system tray (by the clock, in the lower right).  This icon would take you through the process of ‘reserving’ your copy of Windows 10.

Heritage Bank recommends that you NOT update to Windows 10 until Fiserv, our core processor, has been able to ensure that eCorp and all of our online banking systems are compatible.

New Malware Attacks Prey on Online Banking Systems

Businesses throughout the country have reported a recent increase in sophisticated attacks involving a new variant of Dyre malware.  Hackers are using the variant of Dyre known as “The Dyre Wolf” to attack online banking systems.  The malware attacks begin with sophisticated phishing schemes and have successfully evaded most anti-virus detection systems.  In a blog posted April 2, IBM senior threat researcher John Kuhn, notes that The Dyre Wolf malware has been used to steal more than $1 million from businesses within the month of March 2015.  The new Dyre variant is programmed to monitor hundreds of online banking sites, so it's able to launch a convincing spoofed page or screen when a user tries to log into online banking systems. The page will explain the site is experiencing issues and that the victim should call the number provided to get help logging in.  Once users call the number provided on the fake page, they are tricked into revealing details and credentials that allow the fraudsters to schedule wire transfers.  Heritage will NOT post a message on its site stating that it is experiencing difficulties and ask that you call a number posted on the site.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT regarding "Business E-Mail Compromise"

Please review the Public Service Announcement from the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in partnership with the FBI :

The Business E-mail Compromise (BEC) is a sophisticated scam targeting businesses working with foreign suppliers and/or businesses that regularly perform wire transfer payments. Formerly known as the Man-in-the-E-mail Scam, the BEC was renamed to focus on the “business angle” of this scam and to avoid confusion with another unrelated scam. The fraudulent wire transfer payments sent to foreign banks may be transferred several times but are quickly dispersed. Asian banks, located in China and Hong Kong, are the most commonly reported ending destination for these fraudulent transfers.

Attention Windows XP Users:
Microsoft Has Ended Support for the Windows XP Operating System

In August 2013, Microsoft announced they were ending support for Windows XP and Office 2003 as of April 8, 2014:

From Microsoft’s website, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/end-of-support.aspx

“After 12 years, support for Windows XP will end on April 8, 2014. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. It is very important that customers and partners migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 8.1.”

It is important that our customers maintain their data security by employing a fully supported Operating System.  Heritage will be sending more information shortly about our requirements for your security.
